The listening is over 5 minutes long, but the lesson plan only covers the first 2 minutes. There is plenty of material to choose from for classes of 1 to 2 hours.


Aims:

  • To expose students to authentic speech.

  • To encourage students to infer meaning of lexical items through context.

  • To speculate about a person's career (critical thinking).

  • To discuss factors that can influence people's careers.

  • To make predictions before listening to an audio.

  • To listen for gist and for detail.

  • To develop listening decoding skills.

  • To talk about and empathise with the protagonist.

  • To participate in a role play.

  • To write a short summary in the lesson takeaways.

Use of language and lexis:

  • To use different tenses to talk about past, present and future situations.

  • To learn/ review vocabulary extracted from the audio, especially phrasal verbs.

  • To work on pronunciation and connected speech to introduce/ review the structure should have+ past participle.

  • To expose students to elision in spoken English as found in should've, kind'uv and gonna.
